  • Know an absolute beginner at programming?

We've finally posted the last of the "Absolute Beginner's Video Service on Visual Studio 2005 Express". Now you have a great set of videos (and code) that you can watch and learn about developing with Visual Basic or C#. Great for personal study, classrooms, or really, really geeky Bar Mitzvahs.

  • This is the way we upgrade our apps, upgrade our apps

Michael Bundschuh, one of the PMs on the Web.NET team, has just finished preparing an excellent guide to getting your apps from ASP.NET 1.x to 2.0. It outlines the key issues you may face, and how to solve them. Anyone who's looked at 2.0 knows it's in your future, so it's great to have such an article to avoid the speedbumps.

  • Datasource controls, from the source

If you haven't been reading Nikhil's amazing summary on ASP.NET's Datasource controls, he's now added a summary, so you can read the whole series now.

  • Prime time on channel VWD

Many of you know that we've had an excellent series of videos on learning Visual Web Developer 2005 Express edition (I sooooo need a macro for that). Well, we've now added a few more, completing the intro to all of the new features (it only took Bob Tabor 10 lessons to get that far). In addition, Bob has begun his look into building a Quiz Engine in part 11. We'll get the rest from him soon to finish the series, but take a look in the meantime. What else were you going to watch?

  • More from JD on Security

Remember a while back when I raved about JD and his security Wiki? Well, now he's done a bit of a cleanup and polish. Read about, and share your best practices on keeping your app from getting hit by hackers, crackers, white hats, black hats and even propellor heads.

  • I love that site

This was exactly what M & I were wondering while we walked home from a bike ride last weekend (I had received a flat) after M enquired about the difference between the two.

  • TagCloud: kewl

via Rael on O'Reilly Radar (which you *must* subscribe to): "TagCloud is an automated Folksonomy tool. Essentially, TagCloud searches any number of RSS feeds you specify, extracts keywords from the content and lists them according to prevalence within the RSS feeds. Clicking on the tag's link will display a list of all the article abstracts associated with that keyword." I created a quickie cloud of a few of my favourite ASP.NET RSS feeds. I think the blah blah ones may have come from me, but I'm not sure.

  • Google pedometer (for us walkers)

I suppose bikers or even car folk may get a nice use out of it, but this is a great application of Google maps, and shows the power of an {harumph, harrumph} open API to your application.

  • w00t? ASP.NET usage among Fortune 1000

Yes, I know the "Lies, damn lies and statistics" quote, I even know this one. Still this is pretty cool news: Port80 Surveys the Top 1000 Corporations' Application Servers and Scripting Platforms   TTFN - KentPS: Yes, I know what some of you are thinking, "Many of those are actually ASP". Still, I think this is great news. If you know of one that is still running ASP, tell them to take a look at ASP.NET, and at our migration guide, and tell us how we can make it easier for them to convert.

  • Cool C9 video

I don't normally pause Deireadh An Tuath for a video, but this was one of Steve. Includes his own call to action for developers, a few more "developers, developers, developers" and more. Watch it!

  • Migration complete

Well, with my new cable modem in place (it's not just the Internets, it's Xtreme!) I consider our migration 150 km (or so) complete. Boxes are still everywhere, and I haven't set up my main desktop, but I have wireless, my XBox and a comfy chair, so I'm done. Moving, as I've said in the past, isn't my favourite activity. However, like with all things, there are worse parts, and better parts. Worst part of moving: Sitting in the back seat of the car for three (or so) hours, with two frightened, meowling cats on my lap and/or by my ear. A...

  • Interactive ASP.NET 2.0 tutorial

*Finally* wrestled my office, the assorted tools used for content management and the content itself to the ground, and propped a lovely interactive training session from Three Point Technologies (formerly Learnit Corp). This one shows you how you can easily access data using the new functionality of ASP.NET 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005.

  • Coining phrases

I've been thinking of coining a few phrases for a while, and now (after checking with m' posse), I give them to you to hopefully spread throughout the world. ecquaintance - Someone you only know through email, IM, chatboards, blogs or other non-personal electronic means. (from electronic and acquaintance) email chicken - When someone sends email to a group of people, and at least one person needs to respond, but no one wants to be the first to respond, so they all see how long they can go until someone chickens out and responds. Feel free to use them, they're released under the GPL,...
